A sequel to Robur the Conqueror, it describes how the evil genius Rubur creates terror among people with another of his inventions and policeman John Strock is given the responsibility to solve the mystery. When Verne wrote the novel, his health was deteriorating. Master of the World is a "black novel," filled with sinister ideas and panic of the rise of dictators such as the novel's villain, Robur, and totalitarianism probably inspired by the contemporary political upheavals.
