He was born in an aristocratic Russian family to Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy and Countess Mariya Tolstaya. He was the 4th of their 5 children. He lost his mother when he was 2 and his father when he was 9. In 1860, After the death of his brother Nikolay, Tolstoy decided to marry Sophia Andreevna Behrs. They had 13 children, eight of whom survived childhood.
